This remarkable GOES image was taken on September 2, 1996, and illustrates how wild the 1996 Hurricane season was. It shows the unusual situation of four active tropical storms all active in the northern Atlantic at the same time. Two of the storms are hurricanes, Edouard brushing the coast of New England and Fran, north of Puerto Rico, taking aim at the Carolina coast. The other two are tropical storms, the fading Gustav due east of Fran, and the waxing Hortense just entering the field of view at the lower right. GOES Image: Courtesy of GSFC/NASA
