The predominant religious group in the Middle East is the Muslim religion. Sunni Muslims are the largest group worldwide, in terms of numbers. The largest grouping of Shiite Muslims occurs in Iran. Iraq has a large Shiite population south of Baghdad. Other large Shiite populations exist in Yemen, Lebanon and parts of Turkey.
