ETE Mission Statement
Exploring the Environment (ETE) is a
three-year project to develop Environmental Earth Science modules that make use of NASA's
Earth Science database. The classroom modules, which will be delivered to high school
classrooms via the Internet, are being developed by the NASA Classroom of the
Future, Wheeling Jesuit University as part of NASA's High Performance Computing and
Communications (HPCC) initiative. ETE project features include on-line collaboration,
teacher training, and a problem-based approach to learning science. After evaluation in
selected schools across the country, the modules will be available to classrooms having
Internet access.
Typical modules deal with current issues such as:
- The impact of El Niño on the weather hazard and risk assessment--potentially dangerous volcanic activity on Mount Rainier for example
- Deforestation and its suspected effect on global warming and biodiversity
- Anomalies of weather
- Charting the path of vector-borne diseases--Lyme disease is a case in point
- Endangered species--a typical scenario includes the plight of gorillas in Rwanda
- Water quality
- Cratering and the effects of asteroid impacts
