Remote Sensing: Habitat
A common remote sensing tool used by wildlife biologists--scientists who study wild animals-- is the radio collar. Wildlife biologists often place these special collars on animals they want to study. The radio collars give off radio waves that can be "heard" by a special radio receiver. Widlife biologists use these radio receivers to track the movement of the radio waves. In this way, they can track the movement of the animal wearing the collar without actually seeing it.

Radio collars have been used by wildlife biologists in southern Florida to study the habitat range of the Florida Panther. The biologists catch the panthers, put radio collars on them, and release them. The biologists then fly over southern Florida in helicopters with radio receivers. They pin point the location of each panther and mark it on a map.

Wildlife biologists can compare these range maps to maps of other data like landuse maps. Such comparisons help wildlife biologist determine the landuse patterns that panthers like, as well as those that panthers avoid. Panther range data courtesy of Panther Net.
