Native Peoples
Image of some native people in a boat."The Heart of a Forest" is an excellent, article by Rick Bass from the January - February 1997 Audubon Magazine. The article will help you with the geography of northern British Columbia and will give you insight into the many conflicts between natives', or First People's, feelings about their land claims and the provincial government's authority to issue logging permits. The tribal land claims for this area of the northern British Columbia Coast have not been settled with the British Columbian government, and permits for outsiders to come in and log the area have already been issued. The author paints a sympathetic picture of the needs of many native people to live in a relatively undisturbed temperate rainforest in the same way that their ancestors did. However, not all tribal members think the area should be left as is. Some feel that the jobs created by logging would be highly desirable.
