The Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE) of the Ministry of Science and Technology has provided an Internet web site with lots of interesting facts about the peoples, plants, and uses of the Amazonian rainforest. Below are some of the pages under utlities & sevices that your team might want to investigate.

Amazonia from Space shows a Landsat/TM grid map of the Amazon Basin. Just click on a square, and the image of that area will appear. Try square 002,67. You should recognize this area. The images provided here are color composites, so it is difficult to do much image analysis. However, you can convert the images to .tif or .pic and mosaic them into larger satellite images using NIH Image.

The first of two maps of Desforestation of Amazonia shows percentages of deforestation over the entire Amazon Basin. The second map shows specific areas of the Amazon Basin along with deforestation statistics. (Don't let the Portuguese text scare you off. The text on the maps is in English.)

Remote Sensing Of The Legal Brazillian Amazonia provides some information about rubber trees and production in an area you should know well by now.

Wander around some of the other INPE pages under "Educational Stuff." You never know what you might find useful.
