Primary Objectives of Various Land Management Systems

Biological Reserve

  • Conserve representative samples within ecosystem
  • Preserve genetic reserves
  • Provide opportunities for research, education and monitoring

National Park

  • Conserve ecosystem samples and preserve genetic resources
  • Provide recreational opportunities
  • Provide opportunities for research and monitoring
  • Protect national cultural heritage
  • Improve environmental quality

National Cultural Monument

  • Protect national cultural heritage
  • Provide opportunities for research, education and monitoring

Forest Reserve

  • Conserve and improve hydrological systems
  • Control erosion and sedimentation
  • Conserve and improve timber and forest resources
  • Provide opportunities for recreation
  • Protect and administer wildlife resources
  • Provide opportunities for research, monitoring, and education
  • Protect national cultural heritage
  • Integrate use of rural and marginal resources

Wildlife Refuge

  • Conserve representative ecosystem samples
  • Conserve genetic resources
  • Provide opportunities for education, monitoring, and research

Indian Reserve

  • Protect and administer wildlife resources
  • Protect national cultural heritage

Extractive Reserve

  • Protect and administer wildlife resources
  • Protect national cultural heritage
  • Achieve conservation and integrate use of rural and marginal resources

Biosphere Reserve

  • Conserve representative samples of ecosystem
  • Conserve genetic resources
  • Provide opportunities for research, monitoring, and education
  • Achieve conservation and integrate use of rural and marginal resources

Special Considerations

  • National Parks, National Monuments, Wildlife Reserves, and Forest Reserves can promote ecotourism, which provides additional income.
  • Extractive and Indian Reserves provide some protection for wildlife preservation and permit sustainable agriculture and agroforestry.
  • Biosphere and Biological Reserves must include a buffer zone to minimize the abrupt transition from developments to the rainforest ecosystem.
  • Biosphere, Biological, and Wildlife Reserve areas may be joined by "corridors," which would permit the unimpeded passage of wildlife.
  • All types of reserves must be supported by adequate financial and human resources to function sustainably.
