Historically, there have been two very different meanings for the phrase "wetlands management." The first refers to the removal of wetlands in order to make the areas more useful to humans. This removal is accomplished by draining the areas, filling them with soil, and/or diverting water away from them. The second definition of wetlands management refers to the protection of wetlands through the preservation and restoration of existing wetlands, as well as the construction of new ones.
