CET’S Doty Delivers the NASA Message on MESSENGER
MESSENGER will be the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury. The project’s name comes from "MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging," highlighting the project's scientific goals. Doty is one of several MESSENGER fellows, whose role is to train at least 120 educators each on the MESSENGER curriculum. During a training session, educators receive via CD-ROM the pre-K through 12 MESSENGER curriculum. They also receive "More Than the Eyes Can See," a NASA video on infrared energy. The MESSENGER Educator Fellowship Program is sponsored by NASA’s Challenger Center for Space Science Education. At a meeting at Kennedy Space Center in Florida scheduled to coincide with the launch of the MESSENGER probe, Doty was recognized for spreading the MESSENGER curriculum to more people than any other fellow. Since the program began, she has reached more than 300 educators through workshops in West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. She taught 190 educators in the 2003-2004 school year alone. Doty also spoke at the meeting on how she was able to reach so wide an audience. She explained some of the methods she used as well as her plans for future MESSENGER workshops. In the audience were other MESSENGER fellows along with curriculum writers and scientists working on the mission. An environmental biologist, Doty has contributed to a number of projects at the Classroom of the Future, including the award-winning Exploring the Environment® online program; Earth science online curriculum created for the Cuyahoga Valley (OH) Environmental Education Center; and InSTEP™, which combines science, problem-based learning, and technology for West Virginia educators. A delay in launch prevented Doty from viewing the
MESSENGER rocket launch in person, but the spacecraft did launch
successfully Aug. 3 aboard a Boeing Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral
Air Force Station in Florida. |
