Research Center Targets Today's Learners What if your child asked you—no, begged you—for more science and mathematics in his or her life? You’d probably be floored, but a new focus at the Center for Educational Technologies® at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV, might make such a scenario possible. The center is aggressively expanding its market presence by transforming into a university-industry research center. This concept connects two players with different focuses but similar interests. Universities do research. Industries need research. With less government financial support available each year for universities and with private sector firms cutting back on their own research and development, the partnership makes sense. The university research then becomes market-driven, focused by the industry partner. The end result is marketable products that address formal and informal learning for K-12 students thanks to the expertise that a place like the Center for Educational Technologies offers. more... Want to Play a Game? Great! Americans love, really love, video games. More than half of Americans play one each week. The Center for Educational Technologies® is working to translate that fascination into a better student. The center, which is located at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV, specializes in cutting-edge learning research. Researchers there are examining the learning sciences that go into immersive 3-D games as well as role-playing games. In particular, they’re focusing on advanced game technologies and their impact and value as learning environments for the next generation of knowledge workers. more... Teachers Ready to Get
InSTEP™ During Summer The InSTEP™ program, which over the last three years has trained more than 8,000 teachers in the latest educational technology and constructivist teaching strategies, recently kicked off its summer sessions. InSTEP, which stands for Integrating Strategies and Technology in Education Practice, had its first session the week of June 14 at the Center for Educational Technologies® on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit University. Other sessions are scheduled throughout the state of West Virginia during the summer. About 500 math, science, and technology teachers serving K-16 students are scheduled to participate this summer. Through the InSTEP model, those teachers will then hold professional development sessions in their home areas throughout the school year, passing on what they have learned to other teachers and thus extending the program’s reach. more... Center Keeps Students SHARP

coordinated by the center, kicked off June 14 and runs until July 23.
