Ecology Unit Seeks Teachers A new online ecology unit created at the NASA-sponsored Classroom of the Future needs teachers to help beta test it. Journey to El Yunque seeks to improve students' understanding of ecology and changing ecosystems. In particular, the web site focuses on ecosystem environments and scientific inquiry. Journey to El Yunque is targeted for grades 6-8. It is funded through a National Science Foundation grant. Researchers at the Classroom of the Future are looking for 30 pairs of teachers to beta test this curriculum. Teachers must apply in pairs because a randomized testing approach is being used. That means that one teacher in the pair will be randomly assigned to serve as a control for the 2005-06 school year and implement in 2006-07; the other teacher will participate in a two-day workshop in summer 2005 and implement Journey to El Yunque in 2006-07. Participating teachers receive a $120 stipend for attending the two-day training workshop at the Classroom of the Future on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV. Expenses for travel, lodging, and meals are provided. Classroom internet access is required to participate. Materials will be provided for teachers to use in the classroom. The 30 workshop spots will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis. To participate in this beta test, contact Judy Martin at jmartin@cet.edu or by calling her at 304-243-2491. |
