Week Seven: Volcanic Eruption
Volcanoes & Global Climate Change
Weeks 7, 8, and 9 make up a three-week cycle about a volcanic eruption. Currently, you are in the Sphere Study week of the cycle.

This week you should refer to the resources listed under Readings & Recommendations, and you need to complete the assignment listed under Sphere Study Assignment & Rubric. This week’s assignment focuses on …

  • Identifying and researching the key concepts for the second sphere you will be studying
  • Helping your Sphere Group members understand the key concepts and critical questions
  • Identifying interactions between the event of the week, a volcanic eruption, and your sphere

Suggested Activities for Your Students

Change and Cycles: Lesson, Where Land, Air, and Water Meet. This activity discusses atmospheric content--such as parts per million. It helps students understand concern over changes in carbon dioxide, methane and other trace gases.

"When the Sulfur Flows-You Get Temperature Lows." Welcome to NASA's Earth Science Enterprise: Educational Activity Supplement. pp. 35-39.

Go to the NASA EOS IDA Volcanology Web site. Click on Educational Outreach, then Links to Other Volcano K-12 Educational Sites: Lessons and Activities. Select an activity or lesson to do with your students.

Look at the Volcanoes Module in Exploring the Environment™. Read the geology section.

Sphere Study Assignment & Rubric
This week you and your Sphere Group will become experts in the relationship of individual spheres to an Earth event.

You will need to read about a volcanic eruption before you can do the Sphere Study Assignment & Rubric.

Note: Refer to Group & Team Formation to find out which sphere you should be studying this week.
