Wood Use: By the Board Foot
Another system of measuring forest productivity is the board foot. A board foot is a measure of wood equal to the volume of a board 12x12x1 inches (144 cubic inches). Any piece of wood that has a volume of 144 cubic inches has a volume equal to one board foot.

All of the pieces of wood sketched below have the same volume: one board foot.

Image showing 3 different pieces of wood. Each piece of wood is a different size but they have the same volume: one board foot.

By the board foot is a common method of pricing wood in the United States. Of course, one board foot of Sitka spruce and one board foot of Douglas fir would not necessarily be the same price.
